In a paragraph, you write a group of sentences to develop a
main or single idea.
Try to express this idea in what is known as a topic
sentence. It is similar to the thesis statement
of an essay.
The topic sentence often
appears at the beginning of the paragraph.
It can, however, appear in the middle or the end, depending
on what kind of effect you want to achieve. But place it at
the beginning until you are sure of yourself.
Develop
your main idea in the remaining
sentences of the paragraph.
What do you need to make your main
idea clear to your reader?
Develop
a paragraph with two or more
examples and specific
details.
|
Example:
- Today women are more
prominent in the business
world than they have ever
been before. In
business schools,
it is now common to find
classes made up mostly or
entirely of female students.
Many of these students go on
to successful careers in
the professional world,
some rising to the top of
their professions and
becoming presidents of their
own companies. Within the
next few years, we may even
see a company with a majority
of female employees.
This paragraph provides two
specific examples of women in
business: in business schools, and in
the professional world.
